Ever wonder what the Speed Rating on your motorcycle tire actually means. Yes, it is the rating for the speed that your tire was designed to safely go without risk of tire failure but what does “P” mean?
Well here is a simple chart that will hopefully take some of the mystery out of Speed Rating.
Motorcycle Tire Speed Rating Chart
||Tire Design Speed Limits
||Up to 30mph
||Up to 50mph
||Up to 62mph
||Up to 62mph
||Up to 87mph
||Up to 93mph
||Up to 112mph
||Up to 149mph
||Up to 168mph
Using the above example, we see that a Speed Rating of “P” means that your tire is rated to go up 93mph safely. Also, that deal you found online for “J” rated tires might not be the wisest choice if you plan to ride on the interstate or the track.
Speed Rating Final Thoughts
Knowing the “Speed Rating” that your tire is designed to meet allows you to select a tire to match your style of riding. Another thing to remember is to have tires with the same Speed Rating on your bike since the top speed you can travel safely is limited by the slowest speed rated tire.

For those of you who haven’t heard of it, the most amazing motorcycle race in the world has to be the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy). Insane speeds, long straights and tight turns through towns and countryside. A beautiful and dangerous race.

As you recall from our article entitled Electric Motorcycle, the electric motorcycle has been having a hard time being taken seriously here in the USA. Well, it might just have a fighting chance. Harley-Davidson has been developing an electric motorcycle called Project LiveWire. It isn’t available for purchase yet but Harley-Davidson wants to know what you think about it. So much so, that they are taking Project LiveWire on the road, literally. Harley-Davidson is sending Project LiveWire to select local dealerships so that you can get a look at it and let them know your thoughts on the bike.
We will try to keep you posted on the Project LiveWire tour dates but from seeing the pictures and videos on the web page, we think they might be onto something.
Right now it looks like Great South Harley-Davidson in Newnan, GA is the closest dealership on the tour. See the event for more details.
